The Government of Alberta recently ended copays for residents who are attending inpatient treatment in publicly funded programs. This excellent initiative ends the previous $40 per day copays that were a barrier for some to access life saving treatment.
Inpatient treatment is an excellent opportunity to have several weeks of time away from substances. It allows a person to learn skills and deal with past trauma. It can be a foundation for sustained recovery.
Inpatient treatment should also be seen as a stepping stone towards ongoing longer term engagement with recovery supports, be they professional counselors, addiction recovery groups or other resources.
